A study on comportable opening and closing movement of the mandible through mandibular kinesiograph

Abstract
The author has studied distances and patterns of comfortable opening and closing movement of the mandible in the sagittal and frontal trajectory through the newly developed electric mandibular movement analyzing device(MKG-K5AR. Myotronics Re-search Inc., Seattle, Whshington, USA).
The subjects without sign and symptoms of dysfunction in the masticatory system were 38 men, undergraduate students of the college of Dentistry, Fusan National University.
The obtained results were as follows;
1. There were significant differences among the distances of maximum interincisal opening, three fingers breadth and maximum comfortable opening.
2. Vertical distance differed significantly with horizontal distance in sagittal view of mandibulr comfortable movement and they were in the ratio of 1.2 to 1.
3. The most frequent movement pattern in the sagittal trajectory was crossover pat-tern in 71.0% followed by posterior opening in 15.8% and anterior opening in 13.2% in decreasing order of frequency.
4. The means for right and left deviation in the frontal trajectory were respectively 2.4mm & 1.0mm in normal range and differed significantly.
5. The most frequent movement pattern in the frontal trajectory was crossover pattern in 39.4% followed by left opening in 26.3%, undeviated trajectory in 21.1%, and right opening in 13.2% in decreasing order of frequency.
